What is microdermabrasion and could YOU benefit from this facial treatment?

Microdermabrasion is a facial treatment in which a machine applies medical grade crystals onto the skin to remove the outer later of dead skin cells. In essence, it’s like a high-grade exfoliation procedure. Exfoliation involves the removal of the oldest dead skin cells on the skin’s outermost surface.
Microdermabrasion dates all the way back to ancient Egypt, where doctors used sand paper to smooth the appearance of the skin. In 1985, the first microdermabrasion machine was developed by dermatologists in Italy and ten years later, it was adopted by the U.S.
As we age, our skin might look duller and have fine lines while losing its elasticity and firmness. Our skin changes as we age because our cell turnover slows down. Cell turnover is when dead skin cells are shed and replaced with newer (younger looking) cells, and this is key to having youthful skin! We all want to have more youthful looking skin, don’t we?
Unfortunately, or skin ages rapidly.
When we are babies, our cells renew every 14 days. As we grow into our teenage years, the renewal of our cells slows down to every 21 to 28 days. By our middle-aged years, it continues to progress to 28 to 42 days. And by the time we reach 50 years and older, our cells renew every 42 to a whopping 84 days. This is why our skin changes in its appearance over time as we age.
That beautiful brand-new baby skin we all once had years ago loses that youthful glow as the renewal and restoration of our skin cells slows down through time. Exfoliation is the only way we can restore and replenish those skin cells and microdermabrasion is the perfect way to do that!
There are many benefits to this treatment, all of which will renew your skin and bring back that beautiful radiant glow we all long to have.
Microdermabrasion has multiple benefits to your skin. This special treatment will improve your skin in the following ways:
It will increase your cell turnover rate.Remember how our cell turnover slows down as you age? This will give those cells the boost they need be activated again, causing your skin to replenish itself more frequently.
It will minimize fine lines and wrinkles. As we age, we all develop fine lines and wrinkles. Shedding those superficial layers of skin cells will ultimately reveal younger looking skin buried beneath the surface.
It will reverse pigmentation problems. Skin pigmentation changes affect the color of your skin. When these cells become damaged or unhealthy, it often results in age spots or patches of different colored skin that are highly visible on your face. If your skin has developed pigmentation problems, this treatment will reverse the damage and clear unwanted discoloration.
It will increase collagen production. Collagen is a hard, insoluble, and fibrous protein that the body uses to strengthen your skin and give it elasticity. As we age, Collagen production slows down, so a boost in production of this mighty protein would be extremely beneficial to your skin.
It will smooth out scars. Because microdermabrasion penetrates the skin at a much deeper level than a daily exfoliator, it has the ability to smooth out any scar tissue on your face.
Microdermabrasion sounds pretty amazing, doesn’t it? Who wouldn’t want to get younger looking skin and clear out all those dead skin cells to reveal the radiant undamaged skin beneath?
If you plan on setting up appointments to get this treatment started, here are a few more details that will prepare you for your procedure:
The treatment is painless. You don’t’ need to worry about it being painful. Despite the concept of removing the top layer of your skin, it will not hurt!
There will be redness after the treatment. This is perfectly normal and it should subside within 2-3 hours.
Your skin will be much more sensitive to the sun. Plan on staying inside for the rest of the day to avoid direct sun exposure.
You will need many treatments to reach the desired results. One treatment won’t be enough to successfully renew and restore your skin. Talk to your skin care specialist and design a custom plan that works for you.
A note of caution. There are certain skin types microdermabrasion is NOT good for. If you have the following skin conditions, this treatment is not a good option for you.
  • Active acne
  • Untreated rosacea
  • Eczema
  • Dermatitis
  • And if you have any lesions or tattoos in the area where microdermabrasion will take place.
